FIRE Safety Challenges in Building Design & Best Practices in Myanmar

As part of our Knowledge Sharing Session, Surbana Jurong (SJ) Myanmar is pleased to invite you to attend our webinar entitled Fire Safety Challenges in Building Design & Best Practices in Myanmar.

It is essential for everyone to learn the importance of fire safety and awareness in building designs with the continuous development of urbanization in Myanmar. In this webinar we have invited Mr. Christopher TAN, Managing Director from SJ Fire Safety Consultancy, and Mr. Thein Tun Oo, Director from Myanmar Fire Service Department to share their insights on regulating building fire safety. Both our speakers will introduce best practices in fire safety design and pragmatic fire safety solutions that will help address the challenges faced by designers to meet regulatory compliance in Myanmar.

The sharing will be supplemented by a Panel Discussion and Q&A Session, where Mr. Hla Min, Principal Architect and Mr. Thuya Win Tin, Principal Engineer (M&E), both from Surbana International Consultants (Myanmar) Co., Ltd. will join our two speakers. Our panelists will be sharing their technical experience with fire safety design submission for actual projects in Myanmar.

Mr Tony Yang, Managing Director from NVIH Group, will perform the role of Host/Moderator throughout the webinar.

Mr. Christopher TAN Eng Kiong

Managing Director, Fire Safety Consultancy

Christopher Tan is the Managing Director of SJ Fire Safety Consultancy under the SJ Group. Prior to joining SJ, he spent 35 years with the Singapore Civil Defence Force where he was the Senior Assistant Commissioner and Director of Fire Safety & Shelter Department. He has held other senior leadership appointments such as Director of Civil Defence Academy and Commander of Operational Civil Defence Division.

During his stint as the Director of Fire Safety & Shelter Department, Christopher regulated the fire safety in Singapore. He introduced legislative amendments, developed policies, and enforced professionalism in the industry to raise the fire safety standards. He was the Chairman of the Singapore Fire Code 2018 Code Committee and was involved in the development of the Singapore Performance-based Fire Engineering System in 2004 that provides alternative means to the prescriptive code compliance approach.

Christopher holds a Bachelor’s degree in Building and a Masters in Fire Safety Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers (UK) and the current President of the Singapore branch.

Mr. Thein Tun Oo

Director, Myanmar Fire Services Department
Ministry of Home Affairs

Mr Thein Tun Oo is currently the Director of Myanmar Fire Services Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs. He started working as a staff officer in the department since 1999 and worked his way up the ranks.

At present, he looks after the inspection and issuance of the Fire Safety Certificate (FSC) for high-rise buildings, factories and warehouses nationwide. He is also a member of the High-Rise and Public Building Projects Committee (HPBC) and a senior licensed engineer that monitors and inspects construction progress and quality control for construction projects under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Mr. Thein Tun Oo worked in collaboration with the Myanmar Engineering Council (MEC) and Association of Myanmar Architect (AMA) to enact the fire safety section of the Myanmar National Building Code (MNBC). He also played a key role in initiating the Myanmar Fire Safety Code of Procedures (Draft) (2020) by the Myanmar Fire Services Department in November, 2019.

Tony is currently the Managing Director of NVIH Group, a privately held diversify real estate development and technologies investment firm focused in Myanmar.

Prior to this appointment, Tony was the Deputy Investment Director of Surbana Jurong (SJ) Capital in Singapore, an investment and asset management arm of SJ Group which, source, invest, develop and manage projects in urbanization and infrastructure domains. He was responsible for the business development & strategic investment plan for the team.

He was also previously assigned as the Deputy General Manager in SJ Myanmar between 2014-2019, a member of SJ Group providing international standard consulting services for urban, infrastructure, engineering solutions, quantity surveyor, project management and others in Myanmar.

Tony has spent more than 15 years combined experience in building consultancy, management, operations, and business development. He has covered an extensive range of project types including playing a leading role in large scale projects with leading developers, contractors and consultants. He has also experienced working with international clients and stakeholders from across Asia particularly from Singapore, Japan, China, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Tony’s personal philosophy is to build a great project and memorable buildings.
